Note: these are editorial reference rates modeled on Tax Foundation data and state revenue-department figures. "Average local" is a population-weighted average — the actual local rate depends on your exact city/county, so your combined rate at checkout may differ. Five states levy no statewide sales tax (Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon), though Alaska allows local sales taxes. Verify the current rate for your location before relying on it.

How Sales Tax Works by State
US sales tax is charged at two levels: a statewide rate set by the state, plus local rates added by cities, counties and special districts. The combined rate you actually pay at the register is the sum of the two, so two towns in the same state can charge noticeably different amounts. This chart shows each state's statewide rate alongside a population-weighted average local rate and the combined average, so you can compare states fairly.
Rates range from 0% in the five states with no statewide sales tax to combined averages near 9–10% in states like Louisiana, Tennessee and Arkansas. To calculate the exact tax on a purchase, use our sales tax calculator; for international value-added tax, see the VAT calculator and GST calculator.
The United States uses sales tax; most other countries use a value-added tax (VAT) or goods-and-services tax (GST) built into the shelf price. The UK charges 20% VAT, the UAE 5% VAT, Australia 10% GST, and Canada a mix of GST/HST/PST by province. This page covers US state sales tax only — shoppers and sellers elsewhere can use our VAT and GST tools for their own rates.
Sales Tax by State — FAQ
Five states levy no statewide sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon (remembered as "NOMAD"). Alaska is the exception that still allows cities and boroughs to charge local sales taxes, so you may still pay tax there depending on the location.
By combined state-plus-average-local rate, Louisiana, Tennessee and Arkansas are typically among the highest, near 9.5–10%. California has the highest statewide rate at 7.25%, but its average local add-on is smaller, so its combined average is lower than the leaders.
The "average local" column is a population-weighted average across a whole state. Your specific city, county and special districts set the actual local rate, which can be higher or lower than the state average. For an exact figure, check your local rate and use our sales tax calculator.
Statewide rates change infrequently, but local rates can change several times a year as cities and districts adjust them. We update this reference periodically; for a purchase that matters, confirm the current combined rate for the exact location.
