US Time Zones Explained — ET, CT, MT, PT, AKT, HST

The United States spans 6 time zones (9 if you count territories). Eastern Time (ET) covers the most populous states including New York, Florida, and the Northeast. Central Time (CT) covers Chicago, Texas, and the Midwest. Mountain Time (MT) covers Denver and most of the Rocky Mountain states. Pacific Time (PT) covers Los Angeles, Seattle, and the West Coast. Alaska Time (AKT) is 1 hour behind PT. Hawaii-Aleutian Standard Time (HST) is 2 hours behind PT and does not observe Daylight Saving Time.

The US observes Daylight Saving Time (DST) from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November. During DST, clocks spring forward 1 hour. Arizona (except Navajo Nation), Hawaii, and US territories do not observe DST. The ET/PT gap is 3 hours standard time and 3 hours during DST. A 9 AM ET conference call = 6 AM PT — something that frustrates West Coast employees regularly.

Timezone FAQ

The continental US has 4 time zones (ET, CT, MT, PT). Including Alaska and Hawaii, the US has 6 time zones. Including territories (Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, Northern Mariana Islands), the US has 9 time zones ranging from UTC−11 (American Samoa) to UTC+10 (Guam). Hawaii does not observe DST. Arizona (except the Navajo Nation) does not observe DST and stays on MST year-round.
EST = Eastern Standard Time (UTC−5) — used November through mid-March. EDT = Eastern Daylight Time (UTC−4) — used mid-March through November (during DST). "ET" (Eastern Time) refers to both, depending on the season. Similarly: CST (UTC−6) vs CDT (UTC−5), MST (UTC−7) vs MDT (UTC−6), PST (UTC−8) vs PDT (UTC−7). When scheduling meetings, it's safest to say "ET" or "9 AM New York time" rather than "EST" to avoid DST confusion.
Los Angeles (Pacific Time) is 3 hours behind New York (Eastern Time) — this is consistent year-round because both zones observe DST on the same schedule. So 3 PM ET = 12 PM (noon) PT. 9 AM ET = 6 AM PT. 5 PM ET = 2 PM PT. The ET-PT gap is always exactly 3 hours, making it one of the simpler US time zone conversions to remember.
In 2026: DST begins on Sunday, March 8, 2026 at 2:00 AM (clocks spring forward to 3:00 AM). DST ends on Sunday, November 1, 2026 at 2:00 AM (clocks fall back to 1:00 AM). The US has observed DST since the Energy Policy Act of 2005 extended it from the first Sunday of April to the second Sunday of March, and from the last Sunday of October to the first Sunday of November. Hawaii and most of Arizona do not observe DST.
