How to Use the Area Converter

  1. Enter an area — positive numbers only. The validator blocks negative values and letters.
  2. Select From unit — square feet, acres, hectares, square miles, or metric equivalents.
  3. Select To unit — the target measurement.
  4. Results panel — shows sq ft, sq m, acres, and hectares all at once for quick reference.
  5. Real estate tip — listing sizes in sq ft (US) vs sq m (international) differ by factor 10.764.

Area Conversion Guide — Square Feet, Square Meters, Acres & Hectares

Area conversions are essential in real estate, construction, agriculture, and land management. In the United States, property is measured in square feet (for rooms and houses) and acres (for land). Internationally, square meters and hectares dominate. The core conversion: 1 sq ft = 0.0929 sq m, so multiply sq ft by 0.0929 for sq m, or multiply sq m by 10.764 for sq ft. A 2,000 sq ft house = 185.8 sq m.

Acres to hectares: 1 acre = 0.404686 hectares. 1 hectare = 2.47105 acres. The acre (43,560 sq ft) is the standard US land measurement unit. A standard city block in the US is typically about 2.5 acres = 1.01 hectares. A football field (including end zones) is about 1.32 acres = 0.53 hectares.

🏠

Home Size Reference

Small condo: 500 sq ft = 46.5 m². Average US home: 2,300 sq ft = 213.7 m². Large home: 4,000 sq ft = 371.6 m². Mansion: 10,000 sq ft = 929 m². Standard room: 12×12 ft = 13.4 m².

🌾

Farm & Land

1 acre = 43,560 sq ft = 4,047 m². 1 hectare = 10,000 m² = 2.47 acres. Average US farm: 444 acres = 180 ha. Football field: 1.32 acres. City block: ~2.5 acres.

🌎

Country & State Sizes

1 sq mile = 640 acres = 259 ha = 2.59 km². Rhode Island: 1,214 sq mi. Texas: 268,596 sq mi. USA: 3.8 million sq mi = 9.8 million km².

Construction Estimates

Flooring: 1 sq m = 10.764 sq ft. 500 sq ft floor = 46.45 m². Tile: 12×12 in tile = 1 sq ft = 0.0929 m². Paint: 1 gal covers ~400 sq ft = 37.2 m².

Formula & Logic

Area units carry more history than most. The acre began as the area a yoke of oxen could plough in a day and was standardised as one chain by one furlong — 66 feet by 660 feet — which is why it is the awkward 4,046.8564224 m² rather than a round number. The hectare, by contrast, was designed to be tidy: 10,000 m², or a square 100 m on a side. Because area scales as the square of length, the conversion factors are the squares of the linear ones, which is why doubling a room's dimensions quadruples its floor area.

square metres = value × factor_fromresult = m² ÷ factor_to1 acre = 4046.8564224 m² · 1 ha = 10,000 m² · 1 ft² = 0.09290304 m²

where:

acre
43,560 square feet — one chain by one furlong
hectare
10,000 m²; 1 ha = 2.4711 acres
square
US roofing unit of 100 ft², still used for shingle quantities

Assumptions: Land measured under the retired US survey foot differs by about 4 parts per million per acre — immaterial for a garden, occasionally material in a boundary dispute.

Step-by-Step Example: 2.5 Acres in Metric Units

A 2.5-acre plot expressed in square metres and hectares.

  • Area2.5 acres
  1. To square metres: 2.5 × 4,046.8564224 = 10,117.14 m².
  2. To hectares, divide by 10,000: 10,117.14 ÷ 10,000 = 1.0117 ha.
  3. Note the near-coincidence: 2.5 acres is almost exactly one hectare, a useful field approximation.
  4. To square feet: 2.5 × 43,560 = 108,900 ft².
  5. Visualise it: 10,117 m² is roughly a square 100.6 m on a side, or about 1.4 football pitches.

Result2.5 acres = 10,117.14 m² = 1.0117 hectares

The 2.5-acres-to-a-hectare rule of thumb is accurate to 1.2%, close enough for estimating and not for conveyancing. Exactly one hectare is 2.4711 acres.

Area Conversion FAQ

1 square meter = 10.7639 square feet. Conversely, 1 square foot = 0.092903 square meters. To convert sq m to sq ft: multiply by 10.764. To convert sq ft to sq m: multiply by 0.0929. Examples: 100 sq m = 1,076.4 sq ft. 200 sq m = 2,152.8 sq ft. 2,000 sq ft = 185.8 sq m.
1 hectare = 2.47105 acres. Conversely, 1 acre = 0.404686 hectares. A hectare is 10,000 square meters (100m × 100m). An acre is 43,560 square feet (about 209 ft × 209 ft). A soccer pitch is about 0.7–0.8 hectares. A football field (without end zones) is about 1 acre.
1 acre = 43,560 square feet. This is a fixed definition. An acre doesn't have to be square — it can be any shape. 1 acre is also 4,840 square yards, 0.404686 hectares, or 4,046.86 square meters. An easy visualization: 1 acre is approximately the size of an American football field from goal line to goal line (not including end zones).
1 square kilometer = 0.386102 square miles. Conversely, 1 square mile = 2.58999 km². 1 square mile = 640 acres. This is used for country/state size comparisons: the US is 3,796,742 sq mi = 9,833,517 km². The UK is 93,628 sq mi = 242,495 km².
