Understanding the A1C to Average Glucose (eAG)

HbA1c ("A1C") is a blood test that reflects your average blood sugar over the past 2–3 months. The American Diabetes Association ADAG formula converts A1C to an estimated average glucose: eAG (mg/dL) = 28.7 × A1C − 46.7. So an A1C of 7% is about 154 mg/dL (8.6 mmol/L).

This converter shows eAG in both US (mg/dL) and international (mmol/L) units and flags the general category (normal, prediabetes or diabetes range). It is for information and education only — not a diagnosis. Always discuss your results with your clinician.

A1C to Average Glucose (eAG) FAQ

The ADAG study formula is eAG (mg/dL) = 28.7 × A1C − 46.7. Divide by 18 for mmol/L. So an A1C of 7% ≈ 154 mg/dL ≈ 8.6 mmol/L.
An A1C of 6.5% or higher indicates diabetes, 5.7–6.4% indicates prediabetes, and below 5.7% is normal. This tool is informational, not a diagnosis.
