Choosing a Symbology, and Why the Last Digit Matters

Barcode formats are not interchangeable, and picking the wrong one is the usual reason a batch fails at the scanner. UPC-A and EAN-13 encode fixed-length numeric product codes for retail and require a registered prefix to be globally unique. Code 128 accepts arbitrary alphanumeric data and is the general-purpose choice for internal labelling. Code 39 is older and less dense but still common in industrial settings.

Retail symbologies protect themselves with a check digit computed from the preceding digits — for UPC-A, the odd positions are tripled, the rest added, and the final digit is whatever brings the total to a multiple of ten. For 03600029145 that sum is 58, forcing a check digit of 2. A misread therefore fails arithmetic instead of silently scanning as a different product.

For a bulk run, two physical properties decide success. The quiet zone on each side must be preserved — trimming labels too close is the most common cause of unreadable codes — and the narrow-bar width must suit the printer's resolution, since a 203 dpi thermal printer cannot faithfully render a bar narrower than its dot pitch.
