What Determines Whether a QR Code Actually Scans

A QR code carries redundancy by design. Four error-correction levels — L, M, Q and H — allow roughly 7%, 15%, 25% and 30% of the symbol to be damaged or obscured while remaining readable, which is what lets a code survive a scuffed corner or a logo placed over the middle.

That redundancy is not free. Higher correction means more modules for the same data, so the code becomes denser at the same printed size, and past a point a dense code scans worse rather than better. Data length pushes in the same direction: a short URL produces a low-version code with large, forgiving modules, while a long one produces a fine grid that needs better optics and more light.

The practical failures are usually physical rather than digital. A code needs a quiet zone — clear margin — around it, and adequate contrast, with dark modules on a light background; inverting that stops many scanners entirely. Printed size should be matched to scanning distance, and the common rule of roughly one-tenth of the intended distance is a reasonable starting point.
