What WebP Changes, and What It Costs

WebP supports both lossy and lossless compression in a single format, and typically produces files 25–35% smaller than an equivalent-quality JPEG. It also does something JPEG cannot: carry an alpha channel, so a transparent logo does not need to be a much larger PNG.

The trade-offs are worth knowing before converting a library. Lossy WebP is a generational format like JPEG, so re-encoding an already-lossy JPEG stacks one set of compression artefacts on another — converting from the original wherever possible is the difference between a smaller file and a worse one. Support is now effectively universal in current browsers, but some desktop applications and older print workflows still expect JPEG or TIFF, so WebP is a delivery format rather than an archival one.
