Every figure in this table descends from a single historical definition. The Winchester bushel was fixed at 2,150.42 cubic inches, which is exactly 35.23907 litres, and the smaller dry units are successive halvings of it: the peck at 8.80977 litres, the dry gallon at 4.40488, the dry quart at 1.10122 and the dry pint at 550.61 millilitres. That one inherited number is why none of the metric equivalents is tidy — the system was standardised long before the litre existed, and conversion has been retrofitted onto it ever since.
The larger units are legal definitions rather than convenient round figures. The US dry barrel is set by statute at 7,056 cubic inches, or 115.63 litres, which comes to about 3.28 bushels and remains the regulated container size for apples and similar produce. The peck has survived in retail for much the same reason: it is the unit farm stands and orchards have always sold by, so it persists on price boards long after it left everyday speech.
The costliest assumption in this area is that a bushel is a bushel. The imperial bushel still encountered across parts of the Commonwealth is eight imperial gallons — 36.36872 litres — about 3.2% larger than the US definition, so a yield figure or a shipment converted with the wrong one is wrong by that margin before any other error is introduced. Grain trading then adds a second layer, because contracts settle on standard weights rather than on volume: conventionally 60 pounds per bushel for wheat and soybeans, 56 for corn and rye, and 32 for oats. Turning bushels into kilograms therefore requires knowing the crop, not just the arithmetic on this page.

US dry measure is a separate volumetric system from the liquid measure most people know, and the two do not interchange. A US dry gallon is about 4.405 litres against the liquid gallon's 3.785 — roughly 16% larger — so a quantity quoted simply in "gallons" is ambiguous without knowing which system it belongs to.
The units scale in eights: a bushel is four pecks or eight dry gallons, about 35.24 litres. These survive because agricultural commodities have been traded by them for centuries, and grain contracts still quote bushels. Since a bushel of wheat and a bushel of oats hold the same volume but very different masses, commodity markets fix a conventional weight per bushel per crop — which is why the volume unit and the trading unit have quietly drifted apart.
