What Counts as "Rich" in America?
"Rich" is relative — it depends on where you stand versus everyone else. This calculator estimates your income percentile using the approximate distribution of US incomes: the median household income is roughly $80,000, the top 20% starts around $150,000, the top 10% near $200,000, and the top 1% begins around $650,000+ in household terms. Individual income runs lower, with a median near $45,000.
Your percentile tells you what share of households earn less than you. Earning more than 90% of Americans puts you firmly in the upper class; above 99% is the famous "1%." Remember that cost of living varies hugely by city and state, so a high income goes much further in some places than others.
