The Generations Explained

Demographers group people born in similar years into generations that share formative experiences and technology. The widely used ranges are: The Silent Generation (1928–1945), Baby Boomers (1946–1964), Generation X (1965–1980), Millennials / Gen Y (1981–1996), Generation Z (1997–2012), and Generation Alpha (2013–2025).

Boundaries vary slightly between sources (this tool uses the popular Pew Research-style ranges), so people born right on the edge — like 1996 or 1997 — are sometimes called "Zillennials." Either way, your birth year is all it takes to find where you fall.

Formula & Logic

Generational cohorts are defined by birth year ranges, and the boundaries are conventions set by researchers and media rather than anything measured. The Pew Research Center definitions are the most widely cited, but they are not universal and other organisations use different cut-offs — sometimes by several years. People born within a year or two of a boundary often identify with neither cohort, which produced informal labels like "Xennials" and "Zillennials". The concept has real analytical use for describing shared formative experiences, and no predictive power at all about any individual.

Assumptions: Pew Research Center definitions. Other bodies use different ranges, so a birth year near a boundary can be classified differently by different sources. Generational traits describe population tendencies, never individuals.
