The Generations Explained

Demographers group people born in similar years into generations that share formative experiences and technology. The widely used ranges are: The Silent Generation (1928–1945), Baby Boomers (1946–1964), Generation X (1965–1980), Millennials / Gen Y (1981–1996), Generation Z (1997–2012), and Generation Alpha (2013–2025).

Boundaries vary slightly between sources (this tool uses the popular Pew Research-style ranges), so people born right on the edge — like 1996 or 1997 — are sometimes called "Zillennials." Either way, your birth year is all it takes to find where you fall.

Generation FAQ

By the common Pew ranges, 1996 is the last Millennial year and 1997 is the first Gen Z year. People near the cutoff are sometimes called "Zillennials."
Generation Alpha (born roughly 2013–2025), followed by the newly emerging Generation Beta.
Slightly — different researchers use slightly different cutoffs. This tool uses the most widely cited ranges.
