That relationship makes intuition consistently wrong, and it is why two smaller pizzas rarely beat one large despite appearing to. The correct comparison is price per square inch, which requires only the diameter. Crust complicates it slightly, since a proportion of every pizza is edge rather than topped surface, and that proportion is larger on small pizzas.
