Clothing sizes are notoriously inconsistent. Modern US sizing grew out of a 1940s government survey that produced numbered sizes, but decades of "vanity sizing" have since shifted those numbers downward, so a size today is larger than the same number was 40 years ago. Europe largely standardised on body-measurement-based numbers (the EU/“EN 13402” system), while the UK kept its own scale — leaving shoppers to translate between US, UK, EU and Italian numbers.
