Glove sizing is based on hand circumference measured around the palm at the knuckles, excluding the thumb. The traditional numeric system quotes that circumference in inches directly, so a size 9 glove fits a 9-inch hand — which makes it one of the more rational sizing systems in clothing. Letter sizes map onto ranges of that measurement. Hand length matters as a secondary check, particularly for work and sports gloves where finger length affects dexterity, and the two measurements do not always indicate the same size.

Assumptions: Fit expectations vary by purpose: dress gloves fit snugly, work gloves allow room, and winter gloves need space for insulation to trap air. A tight glove is colder than a loose one for exactly that reason.
