How the EV vs Gas Calculator Works

  1. Enter your annual miles, gas price and your car's MPG.
  2. Add your electricity price and EV efficiency (3–4 mi/kWh is typical).
  3. See the annual and 5-year fuel savings of driving electric.

Does an EV Really Save Money on Fuel?

Electricity is usually far cheaper per mile than gasoline. A gas car at 28 MPG and $3.40/gal costs about 12¢/mile; an EV at 3.5 mi/kWh and 17¢/kWh costs about 5¢/mile — less than half. Over 12,000 miles a year that's roughly $800–$900 in annual fuel savings, or several thousand over five years.

This compares fuel only — not purchase price, insurance, maintenance (EVs are usually cheaper here too) or any tax incentives, which changed in 2026. Home charging is cheapest; frequent fast-charging on road trips costs more. Adjust the inputs to match your rates. Estimate only.

EV vs Gas FAQ

Charging at home is typically 50–70% cheaper per mile than buying gasoline, depending on local electricity and fuel prices. Fast-charging on road trips narrows the gap.
Most EVs average 3–4 miles per kWh. Efficient sedans hit 4+; large trucks and SUVs and cold weather can drop below 3. The default of 3.5 is a good middle estimate.
No — it compares fuel costs only. EV purchase prices, maintenance savings and 2026 tax-credit changes are separate factors in the total cost of ownership.
